About St Nicholas Diocesan School

Our school opened in 1990 under the leadership of Mr Anthony van Velden, with 150 learners and 12 staff members. Now in our 29th year, we have 552 learners and over 80 staff members.

St Nicholas has grown in leaps and bounds in all areas. Under the current leadership of Mr Leon Grové as Principal and Mr Kamal Rugbar as Junior School Headmaster, the entire staff have adopted and promote a growth mind-set attitude amongst the learners.

Beyond our incredible growth, we have the privilege and honour of being the first school in Pietermaritzburg to become a member of SAESC – The South African Extraordinary Schools Coalition.

St Nicholas recently completed our IQAA evaluation. The Independent Quality Assurance Agency is tasked with making sure that all ISASA independent schools are providing a quality education to their learners. We are pleased to say that St Nicholas successfully completed the evaluation which we can now add to our Umalusi accreditation, our South African Extraordinary Schools evaluation and our Ashoka Changemaker School accreditation.

Our school has a well-established boarding establishment, for learners from Grade 6 to 12, with dedicated staff living on the property to ensure that our boarders are well taken care of. Our boarding catering needs are met by the exceptional and ever-popular Granny Macs Caterers.

We offer a wide range of sport and co-curricular activities which include basketball, rugby, soccer, netball, hockey, swimming, athletics, canoeing, chess, ballet, debating and music lessons.

Our talented and passionate Marimba and Steel Drum Bands have had the honour of playing at a number of public events over the years. St Nicholas also participates in the famed annual Education Africa International Marimba and Steelpan Festival, which is held in Boksburg.

We have two well-equipped media centres, a music centre, a drama centre, three newly surfaced basketball courts, a lovely pool and a magnificent Indoor Sports Centre that was built in 2015 as a part of our 25th Birthday Celebration.
