St. Nicholas Diocesan School is an independent co-educational school situated in Pietermaritzburg. The school opened in 1990 with 150 learners and 12 staff members under the leadership of Anthony van Velden. 25 years later, St. Nicholas has grown in leaps and bounds in all areas. We offer affordable, private education and we are part of ISASA and the IEB.

Our Values:

Faith, Integrity, Respect, Passion, Discipline, Humility, Compassion, Wisdom, Courage and Truth.

We continue to offer an excellent education and provide a secure and caring environment where all children from Grade RR to Grade 12 are given sufficient opportunities to realise their potential. The needs of the ‘whole’ child are catered for – intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and cultural. Our academic programme is based on the CAPS Curriculum and the medium of instruction is English. We are a small school with a big heart. At the heart of St. Nicholas is our Christian Faith. This is reflected in our motto – GOD LEADS. The Anglican ethos is nurtured in class and school devotions as well as regular Eucharists.

The school has a well-established boarding establishment (for learners from Grade 6 to Grade 12) with dedicated staff living on the property to ensure that our boarders are well taken care of. The school offers a wide range of sport and co-curricular activities which include basketball, swimming, soccer, netball, chess, athletics, rugby, canoeing, debating, ballet and music lessons.

The school has two well-equipped media centres, a music centre, a drama centre, three newly surfaced basketball courts and a lovely pool. Our sports change rooms have been beautifully upgraded and a magnificent indoor sports/multipurpose centre was built in 2015 as part of our 25th birthday celebrations. This was a major undertaking and is a great asset to St. Nicholas.

We currently have 580 learners for 2018.

We have the privilege and honour of being the first school in Pietermaritzburg to become a member of SAESC - The South African Extraordinary Schools Coalition.
